Are you interested in doing international collaborative work with alumni of foster care in Japan and other countries? Are you interested in traveling to Japan in September 2019?

International travel between Seattle and Japan is FREE for qualified candidates!

ABOUT IFCA’S YOUTH AND ALUMNI PROJECT: 

At the International Foster Care Alliance, we believe that through collaboration, young people can unite to improve child welfare at a global level. With this mission in mind, the Youth and Alumni Program was formed. As experts in their own stories and experiences, we consider young people to be just as informed about the child welfare system as any other caregiver or professional. The Youth and Alumni Program works with foster parents, foster youth, alumni of care, and other child welfare professionals to bring about positive changes in the system through advocacy and youth voice. 

We are looking for 3 to 4 candidates who would like to become a member of the United States Alumni Team and to join us for our sixth trip to Japan in September 2019.    

 

 

 

ROLE:

  1. Act as an advocate for foster youth globally and actively seek to eliminate barriers for foster youth.
  2. Represent IFCA’s values as global stewards, emerging leaders, and collaborative partners for child welfare reform.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Research child welfare systems globally and apply knowledge through IFCA presentations, writings, speeches, and workshops.
  2. Actively contribute as a team to articulate our goals, strategies and ideas in order to develop Alumni program content.
  3. Collaborate as a global team by actively learning our partner country’s culture, language, and history.
  4. Attend, contribute to, and share personal insights and experiences in order to take ownership during monthly meetings, IFCA communications, the alumni blog, and participation in the annual global exchange.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Foster youth or foster care alumni, ages 17 through 27 with:

  1. Experience in or passion to learn about youth leadership and youth advocacy activities:
  2. Interest in networking with people of other cultures;
  3. Aspiration to better the lives of foster children and foster care alumni; and
  4. Ability and willingness to engage in continuous activities with IFCA.

** We accept candidates who hope to grow as a strong leader, yet have not had opportunities to participate in activities related to foster youth advocacy.  

COMMITMENT: 

  1. Attend one meeting per month (in person or online)
  2. Write two youth blogs per year (this includes speeches for planned events)
  3. Participate in the “Intensive 3-day Team Building and Training Session” in August  
  4. Commit to doing one project after the September Japan trip in your local area.                        (Examples:   Holding a post trip reporting event in the local area; creating a 10-minute video about the trip; coordinating a roundtable discussion group with area foster youth and child welfare professionals, etc.)

  • Essay answering four questions (350 words each)
    1. What does leadership mean to you?
    2. If you could change one thing about the foster care system, what would it be and why?
    3. Was there a time in your life when you interacted with a culture that was not your own? How did it influence you?
    4. Traveling to a different country can be stressful, what are some healthy or even unhealthy ways you deal with stress? How do you plan on developing healthy skills that will contribute lessen your stress?
